Homemade Spinach Ranch Dressing

We love ranch. We love fresh spinach. Turns out, the two belong together.

Our Homemade Spinach Ranch Dressing takes a familiar creamy buttermilk ranch and blends in a generous handful of fresh spinach. The result is a smooth, fresh, beautifully green dressing that takes about five minutes to make.

No complicated ingredient list. No chopping spinach. Just add everything to a container, grab your immersion blender and let it do the work.

We originally made this dressing for our Summer Pasta Salad, where it coats cellentani pasta, fresh sweet corn and loads of summer vegetables. But once you have a jar in the refrigerator, you’ll find plenty of other reasons to use it.

Why Add Fresh Spinach to Ranch?

First, look at that color.

Fresh spinach gives ordinary ranch a naturally beautiful green color without overpowering the familiar ranch flavor. Blending it directly into the dressing also means there aren’t big pieces of spinach floating around—the leaves become part of the dressing itself.

It’s a simple way to take a ranch we already know and love and make it feel a little fresher for summer.

And if you have a handful of spinach hanging around in the refrigerator that needs to be used? Even better.

Why We Use an Immersion Blender

An immersion blender makes this dressing especially easy because everything can be blended directly in one container.

More importantly, it makes quick work of the fresh spinach. We want the leaves fully incorporated, not simply chopped into tiny pieces. Blending on high gives the ranch that smooth texture and consistent green color we’re after.

Just be sure to remove any large or tough spinach stems before they go into the container.

Give It Time to Chill

You can use the dressing immediately, but we prefer to give it a little time in the refrigerator first.

Chilling gives the ranch seasoning time to hydrate and allows all those flavors to come together. The dressing may also seem a little loose immediately after blending, so don’t be too quick to adjust it.

Blend it. Chill it. Then check your consistency.

If you’d like a thicker ranch for dipping, use a little less buttermilk. For a thinner, more pourable salad dressing, add a splash more.

Make It Your Own

A Fresh Spin on Ranch

Sometimes a recipe doesn’t need a dozen ingredients or a complicated technique to become something you’ll make again.

This Spinach Ranch is exactly that.

Four ingredients. Five minutes. One immersion blender.

It’s creamy and familiar enough to satisfy the ranch lovers, with fresh spinach giving it a little something extra—and a green color that’s pretty hard to beat.

Make a batch for our Summer Pasta Salad, then keep the rest in the refrigerator.
